In 2007, Debra Park's life passed before her eyes. She was eating an apple in her Calvert, Maryland home when a piece jammed in her throat, blocking her airway. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself, beating her chest with her fists, but was unsuccessful and turning blue. Luckily, her two-year-old golden retriever, Toby, was watching and knew something was terribly wrong. Seeing his owner choking, he immediately sprung into action. Standing on his hind legs, his paws at her shoulders, he pushed her to the floor, and once she was on her back, he repeatedly jumped up and down on her chest. Suddenly the apple dislodged and flew into the air. In gleeful triumph, Toby enthusiastically licked her face, preventing her from passing out. In an interview, she said she had "paw print-shaped bruises" on her chest, but otherwise she was okay. Her doctor said she wouldn't be here if not for her heroic dog. There's simply no doubt about it--her amazing dog saved her life.
